Long Time, No See

Hello friends! I am afraid we have been so busy loving life that we have failed to keep you updated. Sorry! Awesome is now eight months old and you would never guess he began his life as a premie. He has so many new tricks. It feels like once he figured out how to roll over both directions (he had a hard time going from his stomach to his back for a long time) that he just took off. He is now:

Five days ago

scooting around the floor,

and pulling himself into a standing position when holding our hands.

He also has four teeth and two more just under the surface. He's still very protective of the top teeth so it's hard to get a good picture, but he has his side incisors on the top.Awesome is healthy, happy, and so much fun. Here's to keeping up with him.

Visit from Jenn and Family

Early this month, Jenn and her family came out to see family, and we were lucky enough to see them too. Jenn and I have been friends since the 5th grade. It's always so great to see and chat with her. Jenn's little one was born about two weeks after Awesome and her oldest is two years old. We chatted, ate Papa Murphy's (thanks for bringing it, guys), and had a fun time. Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Four Months and Growing

Awesome visited the doctor at the beginning of the month and we were thrilled to find that he had gained four pounds since his appointment at two months old. However, that growth is nothing compared to what we have seen in the last two weeks. This is Awesome on June 7th, Peter's birthday:And here he is this past Sunday:And this is Awesome today:

We had a great time with the family on Easter. Thanks to everyone for your support. It was a beautiful day, but we didn't get too many pictures. However, I thought I'd show you some random, recent shots. We love our kiddo!

Can I just tell you how excited we are for Easter? First off, it's the day we remember the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us and show him our gratitude. This Easter, however, is particularly special because of Awesome. We are blessing him on Sunday and I am so excited. This is an experience I have been looking forward to since I learned I was expecting. It's going to be a wonderful day filled with family and friends. My family's coming out tomorrow and Peter's family are mostly nearby (we'll miss you Jon and Lauren!). After church, we are having an open house for extended family that can't make it to the blessing and friends that just want to stop by and meet Awesome. If you're in the area, the open house begins at 11:00am and will probably go to about 1:00. If you can come, send us an email and we'll give you directions to our house. Happy Easter!

February (and a little January and March)

We had a very interesting February, beginning January 29th, the day before Awesome's birth. On this day, Peter's car died. Completely. Due to a car accident in October, this was our only car. We were blessed to borrow Peter's parents' car and it got us to the hospital the next morning around 2:30 am. We were so grateful our car died on Thursday instead of Friday and that Peter's parents' could spare a car.

Obviously, the next big event was the arrival of Awesome and hanging out with him in the hospital for three weeks. He's doing really well, but more about that later.

A week later, Peter bought us two brand, new cars. Both 2008 Suzuki Forenzas, one blue, one red. These cars were greatly discounted due to the economy and we got a fabulous deal.

About another week later, Peter lost his job. We had one day of fear and sadness before Peter got to work getting himself out there. He quickly began getting interviews and in the meantime, it was nice to have him home while we made the big transition into parenthood.

A week after that, Awesome came home.

My dad says big things come in groups of three for Peter and I and in this case he was right: new baby, dead car/new cars, and a lost job. (Our last big things were graduation, new house, new job (for Paige)).

With all of these things, it has been a crazy month, but we have seen the Lord's hand in our lives and have felt of His love. We are happy to report that Awesome is growing healthy and strong (and long). He is over 6 lbs. 9 oz. and he's a happy little guy, even though he doesn't smile yet. Also, Peter has found a new job working for ancestry.com in Provo. He will be making websites for them and he is really excited. We hope the rest of you had a calmer February than us and that if not, that things turn around soon.

Update

We were blessed to bring Awesome home on the 19th. He is eating and breathing really well (the two biggest worries with a premie) and he is so much fun! Friday marked his 1 month birthday and here are a few of his likes and dislikes:

Nursery

As Awesome arrived so much earlier than expected, we had very few things ready. For example, I did not have a hospital bag packed and Peter had to remind me to get a change of clothes. Of course, the big thing that needed to be finished was the nursery. When we moved into this house, we put all our boxes in the nursery and they sat there until the beginning of January. That's when we started unpacking like crazy. It was nearly done the day Awesome was born (luckily). However, it is now a fun, happy nursery and it looks like this:This is an old dresser from DI that Peter and Dad painted to match the room. I think it's awesome! The only other furniture in there is white, so I love the red dresser. I'm really grateful for their hard work.

SURPRISE!

Peter and I are overjoyed to welcome Awesome Funk into our family. Awesome was born last Friday at 12:22 pm. He was exactly six weeks early, weighed 5 lbs. 5 oz, and was 17.5 in. long. We are happy to report that he is doing well. His big challenge at the moment is learning to eat and he is learning quickly. I am home and doing well, but Awesome gets to stay in the hospital for a while longer. Here are some pictures of our beautiful son.

Greek Mythology

I am really excited to teach Greek mythology this year. It is one of my favorite things to learn about. I love stories that teach us how cultures have explained things and the stories are full of action. I've decided to use Greek mythology to expand my storytelling. I'm researching one myth now (the story of Persephone) that I can eventually turn into a full-fledged story and I'm really excited about it! So here's my question: What is your favorite Greek myth? Or your favorite Greek god?

What do you know?

I was reading "O" magazine during my last doctor's appointment and was intrigued by an article. Oprah had been asked in an interview to say what she knows for sure and couldn't think of anything. So, she compiled other people's answers to the same question. It was really interesting to read what people believe to be for sure. I also enjoyed seeing how people's life experiences influenced their responses. One man talked about what he knows about women, and I'm sure it was true about the women in his life, but I found myself thinking that he sure hadn't met me. Most of the people did not make such general statements. I really enjoyed thinking about what they had to say and wish I could remember better (darn pregnant brain).

It really got me thinking about the things I know for sure and made me wonder what you know for sure. Here's a few of my thoughts:

1. We have all existed for ions. We come to earth with personalities and predispositions. However, we make choices and we decide if those things will help or harm our progression. Nature vs. nurture is a silly argument because no one is complete without both.

2. People always respond better to praise than criticism.

3. Things always work out for the best; they just don't always go according to our plans.

4. Having a positive attitude can change any situation.

5. Heavenly Father loves you. He always has and He always will. It's your job to love yourself and to spread His love to others.

I would love to hear your thoughts, whether on the things I think I know for sure or on the things you know.

Our Baby

So, I'm a little behind. This post is about two weeks late, but better late than never, right? I am now 21 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby boy. Yes, most of you who commented on our last post were correct. We are having a boy. We thought he was a girl, but we're very excited. Here are some cute pictures of our baby boy. They are his face, hand, and feet.

I have my ultrasound scheduled. Two weeks from today we will find out the gender of our baby. Please post your guesses if you feel so inclined. Yey! It's exciting!

Readers

On JoLee's suggestion, I have been following Shannon Hale's thoughts on how to be a reader. She is an author from Utah, mostly young adult books, and her writing is wonderful (in my humble opinion). I have been truely interested in her thoughts and wanted to comment about her most recent post: Moralizing. http://oinks.squeetus.com/2008/09/how-to-be-a-r-3.html

Quick summary: Do authors intentionally write books with morals? Are authors responsible for the morals we take from their stories? She talks about her own writing. She is story driven and does not intentionally moralize. She believes morals are taken by the reader depending on what they need the book to tell them at that point.

I agree. I believe this is true in all forms of art. What you take from that art depends on your life experiences as much as what is before you. Does this mean it's the author's responsibility? No. I think authors should write responsibly. If you are writing a book for children, make it age-appropriate but don't skirt difficult issues just because you are concerned about the reader's reaction. Shannon comments on her post that children understand when they are reading fiction and i feel this is 100% true. I recently had this conversation with my dad. Children know that fantasy is fantasy and they have the ability (speaking generally) to separate it from reality. They have agency. They can interpret a book in their own way and take what they need from it.

I hope we never assume that books or art can only have one interpretation. Not everyone thinks the same and so each of us is free to take from books the things that we need. 6th Grade

So, the school year is officially in full swing. This week begins week four of the school year, which is hard to believe! However, I'm really enjoying it and I definately feel that sixth grade is the place for me! I loved third, but this age group is a species all its own and I love it! Our classroom theme is Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things and we're celebrating birthdays of people who have changed things in our world. We started the year with Gutenberg and how his printing press changed the availability of books. We're especially talking about how we can do extraordinary things. I love it.
